But on the other hand, sometimes too many apps could be a bad thing. Imagine for a moment that you want to get some work done, but that your iPhone just keeps coming up with all kinds of neat little distractions for you to get involved with. There are so many free games on there that you can choose from, that to not sit there and play for hours on end would almost seem to be wasting a precious gift that you have been given. Maybe the iPhone is little more than just a slick little toy.

It is a toy that also allows people to put some organization into the other chaotic worlds in which they personally live. If you have a lot of trouble keeping things straight (by which we are only talking about events, dates and times, and not ironing), you might benefit from what some people have called their “connection to the world.” The iPhone might be just a doodad, but it is certainly the kind of doodad that helps people to keep life together. While there are a lot of distractions, there is also a practical element to these devices.

Sonic tooth brushes are good devices, of course. They help you to cleanse your teeth with large, gentle motions. The brush itself is what does all of the proverbial heavy lifting, after all. All you do is glide it around over your teeth, and let its motions give you a nice little gum massage. You are supposed to do that, if you read some of the dental literature you find in the waiting room. Nobody does, but you are supposed to. And after your first few brushings with your sonic tooth brush, your mouth will feel cleaner than it has ever felt before.

Unfortunately, the sensation is short lived. Just like anything else in this life, you will quickly grow accustomed to what the sonic tooth brush does for you. And in time, using anything “less” will feel as if you were just rubbing a dirty stick across your teeth, in a deranged mental patient inspired effort to get them clean. It will most likely result in a perception of failure, followed by providing the tooth brush company with profits by buying another one of their heads. Those heads are where the companies make their real money, much like when companies sell those short-lived razor blades.

However, there are some problems behind all of the hype that this technology is receiving of late. One of those problems is, how reliable is this technology, anyway? Just like anything new, there are bound to be a few bugs that the overly excited engineers who originally worked on this development simply did not catch during the beta stages of testing. With that being the case, is it possible to repair a piece of technology such as this one? And if it isn’t, how many of any given store’s sales will end in returns, as people’s virtual keys become virtually jammed down?

Another thing that we are going to need to contend with is the ultimate functionality of this device. While current models may be jammed into a pocket (or will fit handsomely into a large coat pocket), what about the devices we are going to use them with? The concept of an immensely portable keyboard is not a new one in the least. It has simply never caught on beyond its initial novelty. Where do people actually plan to type out entire reports on their iPhones, anyway? It’s hard to imagine an appropriate situation for this device.

Then one day, a man named Prometheus (or perhaps his name was Jobs) came about, claiming that he had ascended Mount Olympus and plucked from the hands of the very gods themselves a new form of productivity devices. No longer would we be tethered to the walls, as if we were glued to urinals in the pursuit of our necessary functions. Now we could be as free as the critters who do what they much wherever they may- freedom has become the new paradigm for us all. And that day was truly good.

Unfortunately, these days the novelty has worn off, and we are all just that much more ADHD because anything we may want or need has been unbelievably accessible to us all, right now. There will undoubtedly come a time when teenagers interrupt making out, just to check their Facebook (and update their status on the latest moment of lip-locked bliss), and where meetings no longer involve going anywhere. Perhaps the ultimate irony of a truly portable world is that it will allow everyone who lives in it to avoid having to go anywhere at all. That would be truly weird, thinking about it.

After all, how much of the average person’s computer time is actually spent working on something important, as opposed to working on playing the perfect game of Minesweeper? With more of our time allowed to be spent goofing off, since we are a very playful and easily bored species, we will inevitably goof off to the best of our abilities. Indeed, time spent at play is generally the best spent time, if you can think of nothing more constructive to do. For many people, the main reason to have technology does not even have anything to do with working.

How many people younger than college graduates consider potential business uses as a high ranking parameter for the technology they are considering buying? Not many, if anecdotal evidence mixes well with common sense- it’s a harsh little brew, but it does clear out the old sinuses. If our time is spent goofing off, when it might have been spent in some past paradigm working on something more constructive (perhaps churning butter), how much have we really progressed? One might say that we have the freedom to do less constructive tasks, or one might simply say that we are wasting the potential we now have for greatness.

If you don’t like multimedia functions, the Droid X might not be your cup of tea. It has some incredible camera modes (and a really sweet camera to use them with), and also features a really great display. Couple this with the fact that the Droid X can actually function as a wireless hotspot, and you have a very solid multimedia offering that can also be put to great use as a business tool. Of course, even while you say that, you know the main reason you want this phone is because it looks gorgeous and performs its various duties to the same degree of magnificence that one would expect out of a thoroughbred race horse. But whatever the reason, this pretty piece of technology is incredible.

Most of the Droid X is slim and trim, as you would expect from a Droid. But there is one little hump in the back, which gives it character. You notice the hump, but it doesn’t hurt your enjoyment any. This hump allows the 8 megapixel camera to function- it’s not a tiny piece of technology. It also features an HD video camera, which allows it to record incredible videos. There is even a little bonus to the camera’s software, which causes it to recognize and focus in on faces, so you won’t accidentally get a blurry face and a very clear shirt.

The Droid X can function as a wireless hotspot. While all smartphones can get on the Internet on their own, the Droid X is unique in that it can also become a wireless transmitter and receiver for other wireless devices (such as a laptop), and facilitate the Internet for them, as well. This more than makes up for the fact that the Droid does not have its own internal keyboard. Who needs a keyboard on your phone, when you can just get out your laptop and type up whatever it is you want to write?

Have you ever had a phone be lost or stolen before? If you have, you are no doubt aware that your information can be used against you in all sorts of nasty ways. However, the iPhone 3GS allows you to wipe the phone’s memory from a distance. Not too long ago, one had to be a business to gain access to a capability like that. But now it’s available to everybody, even if you aren’t a megacorporation with all kinds of fancy connections. Who says only the rich are able to get richer?

Do you like to take pictures? Well, if you do you’ll appreciate the new iPhone has a 3 megapixel camera on it. A lot of users did not appreciate only having 2 to work with in the prior incarnation. Another sweet feature you will probably notice is that the Tap to Focus software has been improved considerably, which may make your pics a bit better. Also, with the video camera editing software, you can post all of your friends failing epically in videos with just the right amount of slow motion, repetition and amusing theme music. You can listen with the stereo bluetooth option it features.

There is just something about phones where a set of buttons pop out of the bottom. It is almost like watching a very short magic show, when the keys come out and you can just type away. The Blackberry features a full QWERTY keyboard (albeit a rather small one), so you won’t ever have any problem finding which key you want, if you are used to typing normally. So when you whip out your Blackberry (because you know you’ll buy one just because it looks good) and the keyboard swings out, people are going to marvel at it. And they will also marvel at how easily you can browse the Net and read e-mails, because of the pinch zooming capabilities the Blackberry brings to bear. If you like easy navigation, this might actually be the smartphone for you, in spite of its limitations. Although it might be nicer if they’d dropped the trackpad.

Of course, this is not really the phone for long conversations. At 330 minutes of talking time or 432 hours of idle time, it’s okay. But it doesn’t compare to most of the other smart phones out on the market today.

If you are all about the bells and whistles that most smartphones promise, the HTC Desire might not impress you all that much. But if, however, you want a great phone that has some neat applications to it, you might find that little hottie is worth the time to woo. You can download files from your company directory, which ought to save you a lot of time. The display on the Desire is almost as big as that of the Droid X (and definitely bigger than that of the iPhone 4). And in addition to being extremely fast, it also features a decent QWERTY keyboard (albeit with only four levels of keys) that pops right out of the bottom.

HTC Sense is a great little component of the Desire which allows you to share and download various bits of information from directories. If your company directory has contacts you need to download, you can do so immediately. As well, calendar events are a breeze to take down, without having to manually key enter anything. And when you couple that with the ability to download e-mails, images and videos, you have a very robust resource for keeping things firmly together in your day to day life. You can even switch out between different applications (such as the Internet, e-mail and your contact list) just by pinching the screen (it isn’t sexual harassment, because it’s your phone).

However, the Desire is not a perfect device, even with its Snapdragon processor. There is the issue that the keyboard is a little on the smallish side, which can complicate typing up lengthy messages. If you are used to a regular keyboard’s 3 rows, the 4 can throw you off a little bit, as well. Another issue is the complete lack of video calling, something a lot of smartphone users have grown accustomed to having in the same way as we expect indoor plumbing. But the Desire is still nice.

The Vibrant has an active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (also known as an AMOLED) screen, which rocks SVGA resolution and 16 million colors (most of which the human eye can’t really identify, but they’re still cool to have). Needless to say, it looks absolutely gorgeous, and will display whatever you want to watch brilliantly. The AMOLED screen is actually brighter than a regular LED, and even uses less power. And the 5 megapixel camera with 4x zoom is a nice feature, even though Samsung decided against putting in a flash (which is a standard feature on most smartphones that have a good camera on them) for some unknown reason.

Of course, there is one really neat feature about the Vibrant. 40% of the materials used in this phone are biodegradable, because they are corn based. While this is great for corn growers and the environment as a whole, it can make the phone a little flimsy if you drop it. As well, the regular phone features such as the speaker volume are good and solidly implemented. But just like with a lot of the other parts to the Vibrant, there is nothing beyond “the norm.” Welcome to mediocrity, friends.

The Quantum’s screen is 3.5 inches, which is good… but nothing special. As well, the fold out QWERTY keyboard is nice to have, and the overall bulk of the phone makes typing on the keyboard more stable. Of course, if you enjoy a phone that will fit into the pocket of your tightest jeans, this could be a problem. And if you have been secretly longing to use the dvorak keyboard, you will be out of luck with this physical keyboard. There is also no capability to install additional memory, although 16GB should be enough for most people. And the speakerphone is a little on the quiet side, as well.

Overall, the Quantum is a decent little phone. One would be hard pressed to knock it in any respect. It is a solid performer with reasonable features. It just seems as though Microsoft does not realize that its days on the cutting edge of things have faded, and is deluding itself into believing that technology from two or three years ago is still the best the consumer can get. In this world, people have largely found that they can do a lot better. Now ante up, Microsoft.

The Incredible gives you a decent amount of talking time, at 5 hours. This is pretty good, unless you really like to talk and hate to tether yourself to a wall to charge up while you do so. However, the Incredible falls well short of everybody else in the smartphone pack when you check out its standby time- 146 hours. Even the iPhone, with all of its fancy features, dwarfs the Incredible’s idle battery time. There is also the small issue of one feature (the built in FM radio) requiring headphones to listen to. If you can overcome these two problems (and the fact that the phone does feel a little odd in the hand) and still defend the Incredible, it might be the one for you.

The Incredible features Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor, which is one of the fastest in smartphones today. If you want something done quickly, you will not be disappointed. Also, you can install up to a 32GB sdcard, so as to take the Incredible’s level of memory into the stratosphere. You either need a lot of music, a lot of videos or a whole lot of friends’ numbers to need that much storage space on there.

The world is changing in a lot of neat ways. Among these ways is our ability to find all kinds of powerful functions online, using nothing but our phones. 3G has exposed us to a lot of Internet functionality, like the ability to send messages in all sorts of ways, and play more games than you could master in a lifetime. But with 4G, we will have even more of what we like. The Internet is getting faster for phone users- no longer do you have to wait five whole seconds for your site to load, like something out of the early 90s! You want it now!

And we can all sit on the edge of our seats, thinking about how great it will be when 4G finally reaches all across the country. For right this second, it’s a little bit of a pipe dream, since most of the country is not yet bathed in the warm and wonderful glow of 4G. For the time being, we must all bide our time with 3G, hoping for our beloved upgrade to come and lift us out of this relatively primitive lifestyle we are still forced to lead right now.

If you have never heard of the Office Hub, you will soon enough. And then you will inevitably grow to love it, as it takes everything you like about Microsoft Office, and makes it incredibly portable. Now you can whip out your phone, and put together a spreadsheet wherever you are- a childhood dream come true, most definitely. And if you want to check out a powerpoint presentation, you can do that as well. They even have a new feature called OneNote Mobile, which allows you to record messages and put together quick lists, memos and whatnot. With this capability, you can even attach images to messages, to jog your memory later on.

The Focus also has both an 5 megapixel camera and a 720p HD video camera in it. While those things are great, they wouldn’t be so awesome if not for the fact that the screen is near the top of the current heap, boasting 480 x 800 pixels on only a little over 4 inches across. You can indulge your inner film maker and show Big Hollywood who has the real goods. Or you can just take the next great viral video of someone falling over, epic fail style.

Apple just does not do anything halfway, do they? When Apple says they are coming out with a great new piece of technology, they come out with a bang, even when Mr. Jobs steps off the stage to the roaring applause of people he has made rich. And the iPhone 4 is no exception to this universal rule. It boasts the most impressive screen to ever be featured on a phone, as well as a host of other high end features. Simply put, there is absolutely no other phone on the market today which can compare to what Apple has produced this time. But of course, this is the kind of article where it will probably be true ten years from now, if we just change it to the iPhone 20, or something.

Most phones these days have a camera on them. Some high end phones have 3 megapixels or more in resolution. Well, this is the iPhone, so it has two cameras. And one of those cameras is not only 5 megapixels (that’s 5 million pixels, or a pretty big image). It also have a 5x digital zoom. So it doesn’t really matter how much you want to see of the image- it will enter the camera at a quality level that could be used as evidence very easily. But that isn’t all.

Once you have an image on the iPhone 4, you can see it better than any camera on planet Earth. With a set of pixels 78 microns wide, they squeezed in 326 pixels per inch on this bad boy’s screen. If you want to see something and it’s there, you will see it (unless you’re blind, or have your eyes closed). Couple that with the fact that you can now video call people (which could be bad if you just got out of the shower or something), and the iPhone 4 is the best thing to ever happen to smartphones today.

After all, it was not even that long ago when laptops were little more than just an extra bit of baggage, designed to allow you to play minesweeper in between writing reports that it is very possible that no one would ever read. Nowadays, as our nation’s air spaces are criss crossed by a massive wireless network, you can do almost anything from your laptop in an airplane that you could do in your actual, physical office… as if anybody besides the custodian actually needs to go to those primitive old things anymore.

You can transfer very, very large files and data with FTP programs like the one available for free on the FileZilla Server. You can watch free video and streaming television with you Windows Media player.  And there is much more you can do easily that would have been unheard of before.

In our modern world, laptops are even seem as something of an “old hat” legacy device. While they are now as powerful as desktop tower PCs, they have largely been eclipsed from a functional standpoint by the smart phones and the tablet PCs of the world. Why would you carry around a clumsy old laptop, when you can simply reach into your pocket and whip out a sleek, ultra modern smart phone that can do at least half of the functions (and if you believe the ads, all of the important ones)? But what ever happened to just sleeping on a flight?

It has become something of a cliche that all of the information about a person which can be known readily has been encoded onto computers and databases. A person who knows enough about you may find out things you might not even know about yourself. If this scares you, congratulations on being a reasonable person. But if this also fascinates you, to know that you have the sort of immortality which only a computer may grant… you might be the stuff of scaring other people. But all kidding aside, we have reached the impasse at which we are okay primarily because machines do not know the unbelievable power which they wield.

But what happens when someone finally shows a computer how smart it really is? What will happen when the unmanned guns can identify, discriminate and eliminate their targets without needing a human being’s approval? Will we suddenly find ourselves knocked substantially down the food chain? Or will we suddenly find out that food is not the only reason to terminate a rival species? The Terminator was a great movie that could teach us a lot about where we might be headed. We must tread very cautiously, friends.

But the situation has only coddled us more in recent years. At one point (which does not even seem like all that long ago), one had to actually find a computer that had the Internet (which many did not, back in those days), and endure a bizarre symphony of phone related noises in order to find information. Nowadays, smart phones, Kindles and iPads have pretty much taken away the need to go anywhere to find information. Nowadays, information will happily come right to your fingertips. But how important is it really to have all of this information be so easily available?

If you consider that some of the greatest achievements that humanity has ever made were done without computers (or with computers which are the size of small houses), it becomes fairly obvious that we really do not need to have mobile devices in order to get a lot of things done. We act as though our cell phones are essential to our survival, but many of us did not carry them when we were kids (and were most likely to be absconded with). We seemed to muddle through a life, somehow. We need to escape from the belief that mobile devices are so critical. They are not.

But are we nothing more than game playing robots who buy technologies like the iPad out of a compulsion to play games on some kind of hardware device? Are there any truly great applications that one can use, in order to justify purchasing the iPad instead of a tablet PC or even just a basic, old fashioned laptop? There are, in fact. Some good applications that you might consider having in your iPad are “video converter for iPad” that allows you to convert xvid videos so that they could be played on iPad, “iWorks” that is similar to Open Office for word processing and spreadsheets tasks, VLC which is the best media player that you could have in your iPad, filezilla FTP client to access to FTP servers and file transfers and Ares which is a P2P network to allow you to share digital media and files over a virtual file sharing network.

In some cases, there are many other truly useful programs that one can download and install onto the iPad, which will allow them to build spreadsheets, track information relative to accounts (such as at doctor’s offices), and manage small details no matter where you are. In essence, the iPad is the iPhone’s big, uncommunicative brother.

So if you are thinking seriously about going out and buying an iPad, you might want to consider what you are actually going to use it for. If you just want to play games, why not just get a PSP or a DS, which specialize in things of that nature?
